The Missing Pieces

Title Sequence Project

Spring 2023
Interaction II

Synopsis

The documentary is about the impact of China's one-child policy on the country's population and the subsequent increase in girls' adoption. The law was implemented in 1979 to control population growth but resulted in a gender imbalance due to the cultural preference for male children. The documentary explores the reasons behind the choice and the consequences of the policy, including the increase in adoption, especially of girls. The film also highlights the experiences of families who have adopted Chinese children, including the challenges and joys of parenting and the importance of cultural heritage and identity for these children. Overall, the documentary sheds light on the complex issues surrounding China's one-child policy and its impact on families in China and abroad.

My personal connection to the topic.

When creating a concept for my title sequence, I wanted to make one about the one-child policy. This project is incredibly personal to me because I was adopted from China in 2003 when the policy was still active and highly prevalent. When making the trip over for my adoption, my parents filmed and documented a lot of their journey. Those tapes are what I used in my title sequence about the many impacts that China's one-child policy has had on the country's population and the increase in girls' adoption.
